A few years ago I had a bicycling accident. I wasn't wearing a helmet when I catapulted over the bicycle. I put my arms out to brace my fall and broke both of my arms and dislocated my wrist. This traumatic accident resulted in surgery where I received three plates and twenty screws to mend my arms.
Over the course of the next several weeks and months, I was unable to do ANYTHING for myself. I couldn't feed myself, wash my face, brush my teeth, shower, dress or even go to the bathroom on my own.
For this driven type-A woman living in a house full menfolk this was torture. I left my corporate job to stay home and raise my three boys and homeschool them. Everyone in the house was accustomed to mom taking caring of them and all of the cooking, grocery shopping, laundry, and other household chores.
It all came to a grinding halt.
They all had to step up and care for me. However, no one paid the Cobra premium that covered my son with special needs, and his coverage was immediately canceled, which meant his therapy school (that cost several thousand dollars) would no longer be covered on insurance.
Now prayer was the one thing I was able to do and I spent many many hours crying out to God in desperation for my son. All hope seemed lost. I couldn't care for him with broken arms.
God heard my prayers but He answered it in an unexpected way
One of the lessons God taught me was to BE STILL, and Know He Is God. Psalm 107:1 ESV says, "Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!"
God got my attention when I was unable to do anything for my self or others.
He graciously poured out His love and lavished His goodness on me. See goodness is part of God's character, it is one of His attributes. We can not separate good from God because it is part of His very nature. Not only is He could, but He is the source of every good thing.
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." - James 1:17 Even in the midst of adversity, God is good.
We learn how good God is in the midst of our suffering if we fix our eyes on Him
He is near the "brokenhearted and those who are crushed in spirit". It is in the nearness when we are in intimate fellowship with God that we "taste and see that the Lord is good."
I learned this powerful lesson when I came to the end of myself. God didn't just give me what I wanted which a solution to him losing funding for his school and his medical coverage. God gave us what we needed, which was a proper diagnosis.
Originally, our son was diagnosed with PPD-NOS Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified at the age of three. This is an autism spectrum disorder with a grim prognosis. Within weeks of me crying out to God after I broke my arms, we found ourselves in a Doctor's office in Dallas. But in his teenage years we learned that our son was not on the autism spectrum, but that he had PANDAS and Auto-immune encephalitis. After being misdiagnosed for over thirteen years we finally had some answers and began properly treating his condition.
Through this, and other experiences, I learned that God is good all the time. Whether my life is smooth sailing, or I am in the midst of a raging storm, God is always there. He never leaves us or forsakes us, and He is always good.
